Summer Sweat Smarts: Cooling Tips for Active Days

Summer Sweat Smarts: Cooling Tips for Active Days

Staying cool isn’t just about comfort, it’s about performance and optimal health. Your brain and muscles work best in a tight temperature range. Drift too far in either direction, and reaction time, endurance, strength, and decision-making can take a hit.

Regulate your body temp like a pro by:

Work Out in the A.M.

During the heat of the summer, morning is an optimal time to work out. It’s often cooler to exercise outdoors during morning hours, before peak sunlight hits.

Take Cooling Breaks

Avoid being in hot temperatures for long periods. If you must be active outdoors in the heat, take frequent breaks by getting in the shade, spritzing cold water on your face, using cooling packs, sitting in an ice bath or lake, or going into air conditioning.

Dress for Heat Loss

The clothes you wear while active outdoors can help regulate body temperature. Choose lightweight, loose, breathable, or moisture-wicking fabrics to balance your body’s thermostat during summer heat.

Drink Water Often

Drink cold water often, especially in hot weather. Drink before being active, during activity, and after summer sweat sessions. Add electrolytes to water if you’re sweating heavily or for long periods and don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink.

Manage body’s thermostat well and your energy, focus, and physical performance will follow.

Your Challenge:

Option 1: Make a list of ways to stay cool during outdoor summer sweat sessions.

Option 2: Get a large, insulated water jug for summer.

Option 3: Plan your next outdoor workout at an earlier time to beat the heat.

Go Above & Beyond: Keep a water bottle nearby and set a reminder to drink water regularly throughout the day. Aim for consistent hydration, especially in the heat.
