Sonic Boom puts a unique “spin” on Bike to Work Day

Local firm puts a unique “spin” on Bike to Work Day Crew of 30 Carlsbad workers skips the cubicle to cruise the coast. Carlsbad, CA – If given the choice (and a paycheck either way), would you rather spend a day in the office or riding your bike? On Thursday (May 21), Carlsbad-based Sonic Boom Wellness, Inc. gave employees that option – bike or work – and more than 90% of employees played along (including three expecting mothers!). May is National Bike Month and, to celebrate, companies throughout San Diego County have been participating in various Bike-to-Work-Day activities. Sonic Boom, on the other hand, has a reputation for seeking outside-the-box alternatives – celebrating its fifth annual Bike OR Work Day event. Simply taking part in ordinary “Bike to Work” events would be uncharacteristic of the innovative (and admittedly wacky) wellness company. Danna Korn, Chief Energizing Officer (CEO) and Co-founder of Sonic Boom, explains, “We build and deliver a ground-breaking brand of corporate wellness that’s engaging, socially contagious, and above all else, FUN. What kind of example would we be setting if we simply sat at our desks on a beautiful day like this? We ‘walk the talk,’ so to speak, when it comes to improving our health habits together!”

After significant growth throughout 2014, this year’s event featured a pack of more than 30 riders – the inaugural event (in 2011) had just four. The energetic band of bikers departed its “Intergalactic Headquarters,” located within the Carlsbad Airport Plaza, en route for coastal Carlsbad Village. After the initial 7.5-mile journey, employees enjoyed a group lunch at Norte Mexican Restaurant before gearing up for the return trip. While 15 miles may not sound like much of a challenge on road bikes, a majority of the Sonic Boom bikers made the trek on standard beach cruisers. Talk about a tough day at the office…
